Day 1. Auckland, Coromandel.
Discover the Coromandel Peninsula, taking in 19th century pubs and exploring
deep valleys. Cross the peninsula to the east coast where beaches and
dramatic coastlines offer views on the way to Mercury Bay and Whitianga.
Visit Driving Creek, a haven for nature lovers and artists, also home to one
of New Zealand´s most famous potters, Barry Brickell. Here, take a ride
on the old Bush Railway, travelling through native kauri forest and up to a
mountain-top terminus offering views out over the island-studded Hauraki
Gulf. Later, at the town of Colville, take a walk along the coast before
crossing the main divide to Paunaui Beach.
Three Night Stay: Paunaui Beach, Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort.
Day 2. Coromandel, Mercury Bay, Hot Water Beach.
This morning, a short walk leads to a sandy white beach where you can view several offshore islands. Then it´s on to Mercury Bay. Discover Cook´s Beach, flanked by Shakespeare Cliff and with views to the Mercury Islands. Visit Hahei and its Maori Pa (fort) sites then stop at Hot Water Beach and feel boiling water and steam rise out of the sand, a truly magical and unforgettable experience.
Day 3. Coromandel Peninsula, Glow Worms and Beaches.
Start the day with an invigorating walk through a kauri forest full of fern trees, followed by a tour of an underground jail where glow worms illuminate the ceiling above. After lunch, head to a secluded beach to see rare birds such as Dotterels and Oyster Catchers, then visit the Opoutere Bird Sanctuary, passing old Maori Middens.
Day 4. Coromandel, Martha Goldmine, Karangahake Gorge, Auckland.
South of Whangamata, today you´ll walk some of New Zealand´s finest coastline with views of Mayor Island and the Alderman Islands. Visit Martha Goldmine in Waihi. After lunch, stop at the ruins of the old Crown battery on the banks of the Ohinemuri River before walking into a rock gorge with the river rushing below and historic gold tunnels on either side. Pass through Paeroa on the return to Auckland, where your Coromandel Regional Experience concludes.
